Leather Seat Care

Car owners prefer choosing leather seats over cloth upholstery because it looks good and stays looking good for a long time. Although it is expensive compared to cloth upholstery which gets dusty, stained, and dirty, leather interior requires less maintenance, has longer life and with proper care can outlast the life of the vehicle itself.

You Will Need:

  • Leather Seat Cleaner
  • Bowl of Water
  • Lint Free Cloth
  • Leather Interior Sunscreen Solution

Car Leather Interior Tips:

  • Cleaning and conditioning your vehicle’s leather seats doesn’t take long and should be repeated once every 6 months, or on a as needed bases.
  • Avoid contact between certain cleaners and other parts of the car. Depending on the chemical and the part of the car, the chemical can cause damage.

Step 1- Choose a Leather Seat Cleaner

You can buy leather seat cleaners from most hardware stores and car shops. Although leather interior cleaners are not expensive, you could also make your own leather interior solution at home. The leather interior solution is made up of one part of vinegar and two parts of linseed oil. Many people who have used this alternative cleaner say it is less abrasive than some commercial leather cleaners and helps the lather wear better.

Step 2 – Perform a Patch Test

Maintaining the quality of your leather car seats is a priority, so it is wise to do a patch test on an area of the seat that is not easily seen before applying the leather seat solution to the whole area. This will serve to highlight if you are happy with the brand you have chosen. If you have opted for a homemade solution, you will be able to see if you have achieved the correct blend. Is your solution strong enough to remove dirt without damaging or discoloring the leather? If the latter applies, it will give you a chance of avoiding damaged and discolored leather on the whole seat.

Step 3 – Wipe Down The Leather Seats

Before applying the leather cleaner, wipe your leather car seats with a damp cloth. This will remove any dust, grease and surface dirt.

Step 4 – Spray on the Leather Interior Solution

Spray the cleaner onto the top of the leather car seats. Consult the instructions provided with the leather cleaner for the exact application procedure.

Step 5 – Activate the Foam

Place a small piece of the cloth into a wash bowl and gently wipe the cloth in circular motions into the seat where you have sprayed the leather seat cleaner. The water on the cloth and the friction of the movement will activate the foam. Leave the foam for several minutes to infiltrate deep into the leather and disintegrate grime and dirt. Consult the leather interior solution manufacturer’s instructions as some may recommend leaving the foam solution on for a lengthier period.

Step 6 – Wipe off Foam

Using the dry end of your cloth, carefully clean off the foam. This first section of your leather seats should now be grime free and gleaming. If there are still some stains visible, repeat the process leaving the foam on the seat for longer.

Step 7 – Apply Leather Seat Sunscreen

Protect your car leather seats and extend the necessity of having to clean them again by applying a leather interior sunscreen solution to the leather seats once they are dry. The sunscreen will also help any discoloration of the leather from taking place. Park your car in the shade or in your garage overnight. Give the conditioner some time out of the sun so it has a chance to set in without the presents of UV light. The next day use a cloth to lightly give the seats one last buffer prior to hitting the road.
